SANTA LUCIA PRESERVE, Monterey County — October 29, 2026. A visitor looking up hiking and horseback-riding opportunities on Carmel Valley’s inland hills may find the Santa Lucia Preserve’s nearly 100 miles of trails. But the preserve’s operator emphasizes that these routes form part of a private residential and club community, rather than a public trail system that anyone may enter without arrangements.

What does the preserve operate?

The preserve’s website describes a 20,000-acre property encompassing private homes and homesites, community clubs and substantial land held for conservation. Its Ranch Club lists equestrian facilities, hiking and cycling routes, three dining venues, sports facilities, and swimming, fishing and kayaking opportunities at Moore’s Lake. These amenities are described as features of club and community membership; availability and permissions may vary by activity and member status.

Where should an invited guest go?

The preserve instructs drivers to use 1 Rancho San Carlos Road, Carmel, CA 93923, as the GPS destination for the main gatehouse. Its visitor instructions say all guests must check in and receive the credentials needed for entry. From Highway 1, its published directions follow Carmel Valley Road east for approximately 2.2 miles, then Rancho San Carlos Road. Guests should follow current gate instructions rather than enter unmarked ranch roads.

Does a map listing make a trail public?

No. Even where a route appears on a trail or satellite map, legal access can depend on land ownership, conservation agreements, club policies and any separately designated public easements. A private equestrian track or hiking loop within the preserve is not automatically a public trail. Similarly, a private gatehouse is not an emergency evacuation entrance for unrestricted public use unless officials direct it.

How can a visitor verify access?

People attending an invited event, real estate showing or club appointment should confirm with their host or the preserve before driving. The community lists (831) 620-6700 for general questions and (833) 620-6768 for real estate and membership inquiries. Anyone interested in publicly accessible hiking in the surrounding Carmel Valley should consult the managing park or forest agency for an appropriate public trail instead.
